I highlight the prompt and the date using the heading function in Word. I use one document for all my daily exercises. I mentioned before that I have horrific handwriting. Once that is done, I retype the piece in my MS Word doc.

I find my prompt and do my free writing exercise. I am an obsessive list-maker and need to jot things down all day. I use the notebooks for my work lists and my daily free writing. I buy them in bulk when they have a sale. They are A4, have fun covers, are spiral bound, and have perforated pages I can rip out with abandon. I can’t even mark the pages with my sharp HB.

I cannot pen a single word when the pages put such pressure on me. Some are personalised, others are bound in leather.

Natalie Goldberg says, ‘Buy a cheap notebook and a fast pen.’ This is solid advice. You’ll learn about many writers who have their quirks when it comes to the tools of their trade. I write by hand when I free write, and my greatest joy is a sharp (very sharp) HB pencil.
